Rip Current: The 10-Second Check (How to Spot It and Escape)

Rip Current: The 10-Second Check (How to Spot It and Escape)

Look for a gap in breaking waves, a darker choppy channel, and foam/debris streaming seaward.

Rip currents are narrow “rivers” of water that flow back out through the breaking waves. You can spot one in about ten seconds by looking for three clues: (1) a gap where waves aren’t breaking, (2) a darker or sandy channel that looks choppy compared to the water around it, and (3) foam or seaweed moving straight seaward. If you see any two together, avoid that lane.

Rip Current

If you’re ever caught, the plan is simple: don’t fight the current. It won’t pull you under; it pulls you out. Float, breathe, and keep your head up. When you feel less pull, swim parallel to shore (left or right) to exit the narrow channel, then angle back in with the waves. If you’re tired, float and wave for help.

Help others from shore: call 911, alert a lifeguard, throw a float—don’t enter the water.

Beach days are better with a quick check before you go.
