Whale Shark Greets Boaters Off Sanibel — Gentle Giant in Gulf Waters
Reported Jul 2, 2025 (Sanibel area)

Whale shark sighted near Sanibel.

The world’s largest fish — graceful and harmless. Image courtesy of NOAA (Public Domain).
Boaters more than 50 miles off Sanibel were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime sight: a whale shark cruising past the transom, unhurried and magnificent. These filter-feeding giants eat plankton, not people — so the right move is simply to watch, give space, and enjoy the wonder. Around our coast, sightings are rare but real when currents and conditions line up just right.
Arthur’s take: “If the sea is a library, the whale shark is its friendly librarian — enormous, elegant, and here to keep the plankton in order.”
