Sew with me: ocean-inspired bowl cozy

Come Follow Along as We Create This Ocean-Inspired Soup Bowl Holder

If you love useful handmade pieces with a cozy ocean feel, this project is a fun one to make. Today we are creating a soft quilted soup bowl holder using ocean fabric and simple sewing steps. These are great for gifts, craft fairs, your own kitchen, or a handmade shop collection.

This style starts with 10" x 10" fabric squares and becomes a shaped bowl holder that helps make a warm bowl easier to handle. For microwave use, be sure to use only 100% cotton fabric, 100% cotton batting, and 100% cotton thread.

What You Will Need

  • 2 cotton fabric squares, each 10" x 10"
  • 2 cotton batting squares, each 10" x 10"
  • 100% cotton thread
  • Fabric marker or pencil
  • Pins or clips
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Step 1: Layer and Quilt the Pieces

Place one cotton fabric square on top of one batting square. Repeat with the second set. Sew a large X from corner to corner on each layered square. This helps secure the layers and gives the finished holder that quilted look.

Step 2: Mark the First Two Darts

Take one quilted square and fold it in half with the batting side facing out. On the folded edge, mark a point 1" from the fold and 2" down from the top edge. Draw a line to create your dart. Repeat at the opposite end of that same fold.

Step 3: Sew and Trim the Darts

Sew along both marked dart lines. Trim the seam allowance down to about 1/8" so the holder will not feel bulky once assembled.

Step 4: Fold the Other Direction

Open the square and fold it in the opposite direction. Repeat the same dart marking and sewing on the remaining two sides. Once finished, the square should begin to sit up and form a bowl shape.

Step 5: Make the Second Bowl Shape

Repeat the same process with the second quilted square so you end up with two bowl-shaped pieces.

Step 6: Sew the Bowl Holder Together

Turn one bowl shape right side out. Place it inside the other bowl shape so the right sides are together. Match the corners and side seams, then sew around the top edge with a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave about a 3" opening on one side.

Step 7: Turn and Topstitch

Turn the bowl holder right side out through the opening. Gently push out the corners. Fold the raw edges at the opening inward, then topstitch around the entire top edge to close it and finish the piece.

Helpful Notes

  • Trim darts well to reduce bulk.
  • If your machine struggles through the thick parts, sew slowly or use a walking foot.
  • Test the fit with your favorite bowl before making a whole batch.
  • Wash in cold water and lay flat to dry, or dry on low and reshape if needed.
