Thousands of Sea Cucumbers Wash Ashore in Coastal Oregon Town
Tue, Oct 21, 2025
Along over two miles of beach in Seaside, Oregon, thousands of pink, translucent sea cucumbers (Leptosynapta clarki) washed ashore after a mix of rough surf and low tide. Normally, these gentle creatures live buried just beneath the sand, cleaning the seafloor by recycling bits of organic matter. When storms churn up the seabed, they sometimes end up stranded—an eerie yet natural event that feeds shore birds and tiny scavengers.
Arthur’s take: “Even the quietest creatures have a purpose! These squishy sand-cleaners remind us that the ocean tidies itself in wondrous ways. Next time you hunt for shark teeth, think of these soft-bodied janitors keeping the seafloor fresh for the next fossil story.”
