Backyard Volcano with Ocean Rock Layers
Arthur says: “Beneath the ocean floor, ancient volcanoes once built the islands we see today! Let’s recreate that explosive moment—layer by layer—then make it erupt like the Pacific Ring of Fire!”
You’ll Need:
- 1 plastic cup or small bottle (volcano core)
- Play dough or clay in different colors (to form ocean sediment layers)
- Baking soda (2–3 tablespoons)
- White vinegar
- Dish soap (a few drops)
- Red/orange food coloring (for lava effect)
- Tray or outdoor space to catch the eruption
Steps:
- Set your cup or bottle in the center of a tray or patch of dirt.
- Wrap it in colorful layers of play dough or clay to represent ancient seabed layers (sand, shells, fossil mud).
- Fill the cup halfway with baking soda.
- Add a few drops of food coloring and a squirt of dish soap.
- Get ready… then pour in the vinegar and watch your volcano erupt!
How It Works:
Baking soda and vinegar create a fizzy reaction. The bubbles push the colored mixture up and out, mimicking volcanic eruptions. Your clay layers represent how sediment builds up over time on the ocean floor before magma breaks through!
Pocket Fact: Many of today’s ocean islands, like Hawaii, were formed by underwater volcanoes erupting over millions of years!
