Crystal Seashell Geodes | DIY Ocean Science Experiment

💎 Crystal Seashell Geodes

Grow sparkling crystals inside real seashells.

Arthur says: “Nature’s art gallery is full of surprises. With a pinch of science and a dash of patience, you can grow shimmering crystal caves inside seashells.”

Quick safety note: A grown-up should handle boiling water and pouring. Let shells cool completely before kids touch them.

🔧 What You’ll Need:

  • Clean seashells (clam or oyster shells work great)
  • Borax powder (laundry aisle)
  • Hot water (adult supervision required)
  • Glass jar or heat-safe cup
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Tray or plate to dry shells

🧪 Steps:

  1. Heat water and carefully pour it into your jar (about 1 cup per shell).
  2. Stir in borax: use 3 tablespoons per cup of water. Mix until it stops dissolving (that’s saturation).
  3. Add a drop of food coloring if you want colored crystals.
  4. Place your clean seashell in the solution, cavity facing up.
  5. Let it sit overnight. Crystals form inside as the solution cools.
  6. Carefully remove and dry on a plate. Voilà. Geode seashells.

📘 What You’ll Learn:

This experiment teaches how supersaturated solutions form crystals as they cool. It mimics real crystal growth in cavities, but with ocean flair.

Pocket Fact: Natural geodes can form over thousands of years as mineral-rich water seeps into rock cavities and crystallizes.
