Shell Parts Reference
Required Action Steps
- Observe first. Turn your shell slowly. Notice color bands, bumps, ridges, and the opening.
- Identify 3 parts. Find the aperture (opening), the spire (the pointy top), and any ribs or texture you can feel.
- Sketch the shell. Draw big shapes first, details second.
- Label your drawing. Write at least three part names.
- Measure. Record approximate length and width in your notebook.
Mission Credit
- Fossil Scouts: Completing one labeled shell page can count toward Shell Spotter.
- Deep Blue Crew: Completing a full observation + labeled sketch can count as a Field Notebook point.
