Required Action Steps

  1. Observe first. Turn your shell slowly. Notice color bands, bumps, ridges, and the opening.
  2. Identify 3 parts. Find the aperture (opening), the spire (the pointy top), and any ribs or texture you can feel.
  3. Sketch the shell. Draw big shapes first, details second.
  4. Label your drawing. Write at least three part names.
  5. Measure. Record approximate length and width in your notebook.

Mission Credit

  • Fossil Scouts: Completing one labeled shell page can count toward Shell Spotter.
  • Deep Blue Crew: Completing a full observation + labeled sketch can count as a Field Notebook point.

Required Lab Log (Write in Your Notebook)

To complete this lab, you must write these lines in your Field Notebook or mission folder:

  • I conclude (one sentence): _____________________________

This lab is complete only when all action steps are done and the Required Lab Log is written.
