What You Need

  • 1–5 shark teeth (real beach finds or kit teeth)
  • Pencil or pen
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Magnifying glass if you have one
  • Identification Chart

Safety

  • Adults handle sharp teeth.
  • Do not put teeth in mouths.
  • Wash hands after handling beach finds.

Required Action Steps

  1. Observe first. Hold the tooth under good light. Notice color, gloss, and wear.
  2. Check the crown shape. Thin and needle-like, broad and triangular, or curved?
  3. Look for serrations. Are the edges smooth or saw-toothed?
  4. Study the root. Notice thickness, lobes, or curves.
  5. Measure. Record approximate height and width in millimeters.
  6. Identify. Use the chart to make your best species guess.
  7. Compare. If you have more than one tooth, note how shape and serrations differ.
